What Is A Functional  Capacity Evaluation?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a structured, objective assessment of a person’s physical and functional abilities.

During an FCE, we can look at:

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling

  • Standing, walking, reaching, bending, and squatting

  • Grip strength and fine motor skills

  • Endurance and task tolerance

  • How pain or fatigue impacts performance

  • Functional Cognition

  • Impact on life outside of work

The end result is a clear, practical picture of what the person can safely do in daily life and work settings—presented in a way that is useful for attorneys, physicians, employers, and insurance providers.

Who we Serve: Who is an FCE For?

FCEs at Empowered Health & Wellness are helpful for:

  • Personal Injury Cases
Clarifying functional limitations after motor vehicle accidents, falls, or other injuries.

  • Workers’ Compensation & Job-Related Injuries
Determining safe job demands, restrictions, and return-to-work planning.

  • Long-Term Disability & Benefit Cases
Providing objective data to support disability claims and ongoing benefit needs.

  • Return-to-Work / Fitness-for-Duty
Assessing whether someone can safely return to work, and under what conditions.

  • Applying for Disability

Functional assessment that can be sent directly to your doctor when applying for disability.

Functional Cognitive Evaluations

For clients with head injuries, concussion, or suspected cognitive changes, we also offer Functional Cognitive Evaluations.

These assessments look at:

  • Attention and concentration

  • Memory and recall

  • Processing speed

  • Planning, organization, and problem-solving

  • Safety and judgment in work/daily activities

Rather than testing in isolation, we focus on how these cognitive skills affect real tasks—such as managing medications, following instructions, handling finances, or safely performing work duties.

This can be especially valuable in personal injury and brain injury cases, where subtle cognitive changes significantly impact daily life and employability.
